💬 Q&A: A Day in My Life

People often ask what my days look like when I’m admitted, so here’s a little bit about what life is like for me right now.

What does a typical day look like for me?

My days are pretty full. I see a lot of people — Oncology, Palliative Care and Pain Management, Pharmacy, Psychology, my nutritionist, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, aides, and volunteers. The Child Life staff are amazing and have been such an important part of helping me cope. They always know how to make things feel a little easier.

What do I do for fun?

I love doing crafts, especially the ones from Campfire Circle. When I’m not in isolation, I like going to the playroom on my unit. I spend a lot of time building Lego, painting, doing beaded art, and making anything creative. Sometimes I play the Nintendo Switch or do my physio exercises, but honestly, a lot of the time I’m on my phone or trying to sleep.

Do I get to see my friends?

I miss my friends a lot, and some of the staff at school too. I text them all the time. I haven’t been able to go to school at all this year because it’s just too risky while I’m on chemo. I’m almost done — next week — and then hopefully things can slowly get back to normal.

How is school going?

I take one class per semester instead of four, so I’ll need an extra year of high school to make up for everything I missed during treatment. I’m okay with that — it’s what I need right now. I’m really lucky to have support from my guidance counsellor, my online teachers, and our Interlink nurse. And I love my teacher at CHEO. He’s incredibly patient and always goes out of his way to help me. I’m hoping I’ll be able to go to Relay for Life at my high school, and definitely return in the fall.

How is my left arm doing?

The paralysis and nerve damage in my left arm are still a challenge. I’m trying to use it for small things, and physio and OT are helping me build strength and confidence again. It’s slow, but I’m working on it.
